Sticking around: Plant persistence strategies on edaphic islands

چکیده
Aim Species on islands are at high risk of extinction due to environmental changes, including global warming, land-use alterations and invasions. At local scales, extinctions can be offset by strategies promoting in situ persistence. We explored how persistence-related traits plants—that is, linked belowground resource conservation, growth, size longevity—on edaphic respond variation insularity the environment (soil microclimate), intraspecific variability, which is rarely considered functional island biogeography. hypothesised that plants facing strong harsh soil conditions characterised enhanced persistence abilities. Location Shallow-soil temperate dry grasslands granite outcrops, Central Europe. Methods focussed specialist species belonging different life histories, namely clonal non-clonal perennial plants. used linear mixed-effect models examine intra- interspecific trait patterns versus insularity, microclimate. Results Insularity tended promote smaller (non-clonal species) resource-conservative (both species), increasing likelihood Soil also contributed largely explaining patterns: growing conservative. Clonal distinguished highly consistent responses conditions, whereas showed distinct species-specific responses. Main conclusions Our findings have important implications for conservation biogeography plant specialists. may susceptible should or vary, example, abrupt changes geographical setting (e.g. habitat loss) factors N-deposition). Non-clonal instead face differently; some will go extinct, others survive, depending prevailing abiotic pressures. This seems challenge previous views predicted winners losers against extinction.

For example, auxin influences growth of plants relative to gravity (gravitropism) and light (phototropism), placement of leaf primordia, and the establishment of stem cell niches (1–4). These processes all depend on differences in the local concentrations of auxin. Such differential au...

A semi-empirical model for surf zone wave height decay is adapted to the parabolic equation method in order to include the effect of depth-limited wave breaking in combined refraction/diffraction calculations. Several examples for plane beaches are presented in order to show correspondence between the empirical model, its numerical formulation, and previous laboratory data. The model is then ap...
متن کاملThe Edaphic Factor in the Origin of Plant Species
Although speciation has been a central focus in evolutionary biology for more than a century, there are very few case studies where we have a good understanding of the exact forces that may have acted in the diversification of a group of organisms. In order to examine such forces, botanists have often focused on closely related plants that are found under contrasting soil conditions. The study ...
متن کاملPersistence of nonoptimal strategies.
Metastable configurations in open computational systems with local minima in their optimality functions are shown to be very long lived, which makes them effectively stable. When rare transitions to the global optimum do occur, they happen extremely fast, in analogy to models of punctuated evolution in biology. These results are obtained by introducing a thermodynamic-like formalism that allows...
